Rediscovering the Words: Writing Music in Your 40s.

Down on Jane is a blog about rediscovering writing in your 40s, where music, memories, and creativity collide. Explore reflections and stories about being in a band, songwriting, recording, and finding your voice again.

Why We Write

There aren’t many photos or videos from the early days of Down on Jane. Back then, cameras, cell phones, and video recorders were all separate devices, and most moments lived only in memory. Writing has become our way to capture those stories now, to share the experiences that shaped us, and to reflect on what we’ve learned along the way. It’s also a chance to think about what we might have done differently if we had the chance to start again.

But it’s not just about nostalgia. Writing is art, too. It’s how we stay creative, how we keep our minds working, and honestly, how we stay sane. Putting words to music, memories, and middle age gives us a way to make sense of it all, and to keep chasing creativity long after the late-night jam sessions have ended.

Writing as a Return

For us, writing is a return. A return to the college notebooks stacked with half-written songs. A return to the smoky venues where words first mattered because they were sung into a mic. This blog is how we reconnect with the younger versions of ourselves, the ones who believed every verse mattered and every chord might change the world.

Writing as a Practice

Writing in your 40s isn’t about chasing some perfect novel or reinventing who we were. It’s about carving out time, putting pen to paper (or fingers to keys), and trusting the process. Here you’ll find reflections on our struggles and small victories, how to stay consistent, how to balance nostalgia with new stories, and how music still sneaks its way into every paragraph.
